Oil treatment for oily hair – tips

Few hair care treatments are as highly customized as oiling your hair. Virtually every question on the subject can be answered with, “You know… it depends.” What oil to choose? What oiling method should I use? How long should the treatment last? How much oil to apply? It all depends on our hair type and its own specific characteristics and initial condition. Therefore, a catalog of good practices in this context should be limited to one golden rule: test, research, verify and learn from your mistakes. No good specialist will tell you with 100% certainty that this will work and that absolutely will not. But of course, he or she can give you the right directions and thus help you come up with the perfect solution faster.

What is oiling my hair and why is it worth it?

Hair oiling is the application of selected vegetable oil to strengthen, nourish, moisturize and regenerate hair. Among the specific effects of several months (yes, you have to be patient!) treatment, the most often indicated are:

  • restoration of hair shine and elasticity,
  • help in the fight against dandruff,
  • reducing frizz,
  • smoothing their structure,
  • reduced hair loss,
  • easier styling and combing,
  • soothing scalp irritations.

What oil is best for my hair?

It is said that coconut oil, linseed oil, sunflower oil and shea butter are best for smooth, low-porous hair; olive oil, argan oil and macadamia oil are best for medium-porous hair; and grapeseed, wheat germ or borage oil is best for high-porous, dry and damaged hair. The truth is, however, that these are only loose guidelines, and everything should be checked personally.

There are several methods of oiling hair, and each has its supporters and opponents. Here are two of the most popular:

  • dry oiling – the most classic and involves applying oil to the hair before shampooing it thoroughly;
  • wet oiling – also before shampooing, but after wetting hair with lukewarm water or a hydrolate of your choice (such as rose oil).

There are also women who dip their hair in a bowl of warm water with oil and keep it that way for a few minutes. Others add a few drops of oil to their usual hair conditioner (which is not really oiling, but just enriching the product). There are many more tips to follow and it’s easy to get lost in the shuffle… But this is where we come in!

How to use hair oil?

To help you get started with oiling your hair, we put together a few simple suggestions to get you started:

If your hair feels more frizzy after using a particular oil, or on the contrary, it feels too heavy, change it and try a different one. Don’t be discouraged, starting out is usually not easy!

Start with dry oiling, which is statistically the most preferred method. You are much more likely to be in the majority of women on whom this method works best.

Keep the oil on your hair for about 30 minutes the first time. After that, you can extend this time even to the whole night as long as it has a positive effect on your hairstyle.

Depending on the length and how absorbent your hair is, just spread 1 to several tablespoons of oil on your hair. Don’t let it drip grease or it will be difficult to wash out.

Regularity is important. After the first use of the right oil your hair should be smoother and softer, but only after at least a few weeks of treatment will you enjoy the effect of full regeneration.

First apply oil before every second wash. Then you can increase or decrease the frequency of oiling your hair.

Apply the oil to the entire length of the hair. The right kind of oil regulates the sebum secretion and even works well on oily hair. At a later stage, if you are not satisfied with the method you may apply oil only to the hair ends.
